Oct 9, snack. Chocolate. Mmmmm... Chocolate.

Oct 10, Lunch. From the cafeteria in the DuPoint building in Geneva. A $9 salad.

Oct 10, dinner. At Daniel & Anne-Marie's house. A Caprese of goat cheese, basil, and very good fresh tomatoes, drizzled with olive oil.

Oct 10, dinner. At Daniel & Anne-Marie's house. Some fresh bread.

Oct 10, dinner. At Daniel & Anne-Marie's house. Really good olives. Not over-brined, not under-brined. A very good job. With herbs as well.

Oct 10, dinner. At Daniel & Anne-Marie's house. Daniel's Salmon Fettucine. Tasty!

Oct 10, dinner. At Daniel & Anne-Marie's house. Pears and cheese.

Oct 10, dinner. At Daniel & Anne-Marie's house. Dessert, a chocolate tarte that Anne-Marie baked. Wow!

Oct 10, dinner. At Daniel & Anne-Marie's house. Grapes of exceptional quality. Why can't we get grapes this good in Tucson?

Oct 11, breakfast. At the train station in Geneva. A ham-and-cheese croissant and a caffe.

October 11, snack. Some little cookies aboard a train from Milano to Firenze.

Oct 11, dinner. At Colle delle Querce, some pasta and tomato sauce we threw together. With Ellen and Carlo.

Oct 11, dinner. Brocolletti from the garden cooked for a long time according to Carlo's recipe, plus some ribs and sausages, and a bit of other fresh vegetables cooked down. Delicious! With Ellen and Carlo.

Oct 11, dessert. At Colle delle Querce with Ellen and Carlo. Gelato.

Oct 12, breakfast. A caffe.

Oct 12, lunch. Leftovers. Pasta, fried, which is really a great way to handle old pasta. A Colle delle Querce near Todi.

Oct 12, lunch. Leftovers. Some brocoletti and a hot pepper stuffed with tuna which was really good.

Oct 12, dinner. More leftovers. Some sausage, brocolletti, and a bit of bread. In Rome at Ellen and Carlo's apartment, in the kitchen. With Ellen, because Carlo had a stomach ache.

Oct 12, diner. Some cheese. A really good pecorino (from Manciano), some mascarpone-gorgonzola mix, and a fairly unassuming caciocavallo from Umbria.

Oct 12, dinner. Grapes from the vineyard in Umbria. The little pointy ends are characteristic of this type of grape. In Roma, at Ellen and Carlo's apartment.

Oct 13, breakfast. A cappuccino and pain chocolat. In Italian, any little breakfast bread is often called "cornetto" (even if it is not a croissant) or sometimes brioche.

Oct 13, lunch. Gamberi from Ristorante RIno in Roma, on Viale Aventino. A perennial favorite from a restaurant that makes this one dish above all others. This is a half portion, but the result is perfect: pasta al dente, gamberi, and a salsa rosa that has the essence of the seafood.

Oct 13, lunch. After Gamberi, a salad of arugula and parmesan cheese. Excellent end to a meal!

Oct 13, dinner. Pasta. In Rome at Ellen and Carlo's apartment.

Oct 13, dinner. A bit of pecorino cheese and some brocolli cooked by Swana, Ellen and Carlo's maid. At their apartment in Rome.

Oct 13, dessert. Some mascarpone-gorgonzola spread on a bit of bread.

Oct 14, breakfast. Cappuccino and cornetto. At the bar in Viale Aventino which has really good coffee. And it does. Oh, by the way, these together were 1.60, or about 1/4 of what you'd pay for lower quality in a Starbucks.

Oct 14, lunch. A "fantasia" sandwich at a new sandwich shop on Viale Aventino in Rome. This one was burrata cheese, so soft it was spread like mayo, arugula, and melanzana, all on a piece of pizza bianca. With water, 7.25, so a tiny bit pricey, but very good. And I could have asked for a smaller one. Sold by the pound. in Rome.
